Description
Yes Ma'am Circus is a contemporary circus company specializing in narrative shows that revamp classic texts for a modern audience. We champion inclusivity in circus arts for all.
Work Sample
A 2-minute trailer for our first show, a retelling of the War in Heaven. Inspired by Paradise Lost and Good Omens.
10 minute clip from our second show, 12th Night. This scene shows the Countess Olivia mourning her brother and the clowns partying at night.
Good Omens themed act on Spanish Web. Performed by Maggie Karlin and Matthew Kugler
The acts and show clips shown represent some of the full length shows and cabarets we have produced, and show how we incorporate several artistic methods into one show.
History
Yes Ma'am Circus came together in 2018 to create one hour long show. Since then we have produced 3 evening-length circus shows, several themed cabarets, and the first Chicago Circus and Performing Arts Festival, which celebrates work exclusively from Chicago-local artists. We specialize in remaking classic literary tales into modern circus shows with a queer, feminist twist.
Artistic Vision
Our work pushes the traditional bounds of circus by including dance, dialogue, visual media, and plot-driven narratives with character development. We seek to include a diversity of races, ethnicities, body types, and sexual and gender orientations in our performances. All of our shows take a progressive approach to classic texts, refreshing them for a modern audience.
Programs for Specific Audience(s) Expertise
We are happy to perform for audiences with children or people who need specific accommodations. Our upcoming festival will include an ASL interpreter, and one company member will be learning more about performing for visually impaired audiences. Several company members have training in coaching children and adults with cognitive and physical difficulties.
