History
The Magic of Walter King Jr. aka "The Spellbinder" is the 1st African American Illusionist to perform in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Born and raised on the Westside of Chicago, Walter is a self-taught illusionist/magician and is the 1st to combine multi-disciplines of Hip-Hop dance, music, and theater with the visual art of illusion and magic. His most popular illusion is floating a woman in mid-air. King, an award-winning illusionist, has performed for nearly 4 decades throughout the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean Islands. During the late 2000s, he was named as one of the "Great Performers of Illinois" by the Illinois Arts Council.
Walter King is also a writer, producer, director, and actor of stage and film. His works have toured large venues throughout the U.S. and have incorporated custom-designed illusions for these productions. He has designed and performed illusions for artists like Jennifer Hudson, Gladys Knight, and Chance the Rapper. King has created educational productions that incorporate the history of professional African Americans of legerdemain from the late 1800s to the present as well as the "Science of Magic and Illusion."
The Spellbinder is currently the only Illusionist headlining regularly at the Chicago Magic Lounge.
Artistic Vision
My Artistic Vision has always been to produce quality entertainment that immediately holds the attention of the audience and sticks with them like an awesome meal at a 5-star restaurant. While the magic and illusions may be the main course for the viewer, it's the sauces of theater and dance, and the herbs and spices of music, rhythm, and beats that have been the original recipe for serving a "spellbinding" experience that is memorable, fun and educational whenever possible. With the new technologies available now and on the horizon for theater and film creation/content, the goal has been to raise the quality of these flavors and enhance the experience of visual magic/illusion with new concepts for scenery, sets, effects, costumes, and storytelling.
