Description
Moonwater Dance Project is a contemporary repertory company founded by Artistic Director Mackenzie King in 2018. This all female-identifying company is based in Chicago, IL.
In the first stages of building her company, King strived to uncover what qualities she values most in a dancer: artistry, individuality and vulnerability. King created a company that produces high-quality concert dance and compensates the dancers for the hard work they do. Artists are often taken advantage of, receiving little or no pay. Integral to the mission of Moonwater is to educate the next generation of artists to know their worth. The company strives to nurture a new generation of contemporary artists who have been trained at the highest level and have a honed sense of individuality.
MWDP has produced three spring performances in Chicago, danced in countless festivals, toured nationally, taught hundreds of students, and co-produced the Take Up Space Dance Festival.
The aesthetic of Moonwater Dance Project is similar to water and has a captivating duality. Both are soft yet strong, both nurturing and destructive; a force to be reckoned with and unpredictable.
Moonwater Dance Project is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

These work samples demonstrate different physicalities that Moonwater dancers embody. We pride ourselves on being a versatile group of artists. Clarity by Hanna Brictson and The Weight You Carry by Mackenzie King are performative pieces, where the audience is immediately let into the world of the dance with entertaining choreography. While Clarity is strong, precise, and exciting; The Weight You Carry demonstrates virtuosity in partnering and classic lines. Water from the Trees is an exploration of how people's past experiences create "scar tissue" in the body. A memory can force you into the state when you first experienced trauma and can result in immaturity and codependency. While the content of Water from the Trees contains heavy material, the piece also shows off the dancers' artistry and fluidity of movement and remains entertaining for audiences.
