Work Sample
This Work Sample is an excerpt from my one-woman show entitled "Duke Ellington...The Man, The Music, The Legend!" My mother-in-law Kay Davis sang with the Duke Ellington Orchestra from 1942-1949. I share stories about her life with the band during this intimate, engaging presentation. Please also visit https://www.gretapope.com for more info.
The Greta Pope Entertainment 'Trilogy' is a group of three separate educational and entertaining shows celebrating the Black American experience. The work sample submitted is from the first of these shows, entitled "Duke Ellington...The Man, The Music, The Legend!" This engaging performance features the music of Duke Ellington, in addition to featuring historic information from Kay Davis' personal perspective on the America that she experienced at that time as a member of The Duke Ellington Orchestra. Kay Davis was my mother-in-law and shared many wonderful stories with me over our 30 year relationship. The second show in the Trilogy is entitled "Paris Noir...American Jazz in Paris!" Portions of this show are sung in the French language. Paris Noir chronicles the history of African American performing artists as they took their music and culture to Paris during the early-to-mid 20th Century. "MOTOWN...Pride of the Motor City!" rounds out this dynamic Trilogy of performances, as it takes audiences on a fabulous musical journey through the 1960's Motown era.

Artistic Vision
The artistic vision of my work is to share the African American experience through musical presentations that educate and enlighten. In addition, I share my experience, knowledge and lessons-learned by providing lectures, workshops, courses, private lesson and consultations. I have been so fortunate to have a Music career that has afforded me a good life. Music can change the life trajectory of people, no matter their stage of life. I expose people to opportunities and help them develop the "can-do" attitude that can become a game changer in their lives. During my performances, I share stories and deeply engage the audiences, no matter what age.
Programs for Specific Audience(s) Expertise
My programs are for English speaking audiences. I sing during these shows in other languages, but my scripted material is in English. These shows are popular with audiences of all backgrounds and ages. The music is familiar and the message is educational, impactful and universal.
Traditional Folk/Ethnic Artform Statement
I would not consider myself an ethnic artist. Though much of my material is related to the cultural experience of Black Americans, it is presented in a way that is inclusive and seeks to educate and enlighten.
