History
Chicago West Community Music Center (CWCMC) has a history of employing local Illinois artists to conduct free neighborhood concerts performing various genres of music. Workshops on Blues, Jazz and R&B music provide information to educate the public about the history of Chicago music and those artists who played a critical role in shaping these genres. Students are also taught how to research the history of music. They learn firsthand from professionals how to promote live concerts as they are mentored in every area of the music business. CWCMC works in collaboration with the Chicago Park District to provide the space to host neighborhood concerts. Families attend concerts and bring their blankets and picnic lunches giving the Ravinia feel within their own backyard.
Artistic Vision
The artistic vision of this work is to identify less recognized local and regional performing artists with potential to contribute to the cultural landscape of communities that lack the resources to otherwise connect families. Bringing communities together through music helps to break down barriers while using local venues for social, educational, and professional events. It also helps to determine underserved audiences and new audiences that have not yet been developed and craft programming that serves those audiences, and to serve a broad and diverse audience through its programming.
Programs for Specific Audience(s) Expertise
CWCMC concerts are designed to serve a broad and diverse audience through its programming that is free to the general public.
Traditional Folk/Ethnic Artform Statement
The mission of Chicago West Community Music Center is to enhance lives and communities through music. Our goal is to support local artists through the CWCMC organization whose mission is to enable the creation, preservation, and dissemination of art stemming from BIPOC traditions, leadership, and culture. To nurture this we provide a performance home for a variety of performing arts educators and organizations locally, regionally, nationally and globally.
