Court, Convent & Stage: Redefining the Early Modern Woman
Black Tulip's ‘Court, Convent & Stage: Redefining the Early Modern Woman’ was 1st performed celebrating Women’s History Month & Early Music Month 2022 with the exceptional artistry of Francesca Caccini, Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Isabella Leonarda, Barbara Strozzi & others!
Women & Power
Black Tulip explores ‘Women & Power‘ – a program focusing on heroines of the ancient world, both mythological and semi-historical. You’ll hear Alessandro Scarlatti’s “Lucretia Romana,” the intense cantata depicting a Roman matron whose rape and subsequent suicide led to tyranny’s overthrow; “Semele,” a cantata by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre; “Judith,” Sebastian Brossard’s cantata about the biblical heroine; and a portrait of the Greek Poetess Sappho by English composer John Blow. Add in dazzling instrumental music by Buxtehude, Mouton, and others, and you have an epic program.
Tulipmania
Black Tulip presents a program focusing on music, art, FOOD, and politics of the Dutch Golden Age, the period in the 17th century when the Low Countries reached the zenith of its economic, political and military power. An open society focused on trade, it fostered development in the areas of painting and philosophy, and had a voracious appetite for good music, both home-grown and foreign. Tulipmania was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which contract prices for bulbs of the recently introduced tulip reached extraordinarily high levels and then suddenly collapsed.
We have a dedication to present music outside of the mainstream of Classical Music, being an Early Music ensemble, giving audiences historical and cultural context to enrich the concert experience.

Artistic Vision
Black Tulip is dedicated to representing a wide variety of style and composers of Early Music. As a multi-national ensemble, we hope to emphasize what harmony can be produced with the combination of artists of very different backgrounds. In a day and age of international conflict, cooperation and exploration of a variety of cultures can help increase understanding for audiences.
