Description
Anne & Mark Burnell re-harmonize and arrange material from the Great American Songbook, jazz, and originals until they have captured its jazz and blues influenced essence. With two voices, a piano, some percussion instruments, or an additional bass and drummer, there is an acoustic spacious sound and the words are not overpowered by instrumentation. In addition to being a Carnegie Mellon graduate and teacher, Mark also spent 20 years at a Gorham United Methodist gospel church as a minister of music. The Burnells have a new 2022 recording "Two for the Road” which is streaming on all platforms and on over 100 NPR and Jazz radio stations. They have toured throughout the Midwest, New York, Paris, Amsterdam, and Panama.
BurnellMusic.com has videos from their show offerings: The Brill Building Songwriters (Carole King, Burt Bacharach, Neil Sedaka), The Music of Julie London (cool jazz) with full bands. YouTube.com/

Our website https://BurnellMusic.com has edited concert footage and recently released tracks. Our YouTube channel has many of our informal live stream concerts done from our home without edits. There are individual songs from the shows including requests from the audience. We offer several different concerts from composers: Berlin, Gershwin, Arlen, Porter, to 1960's-70's (Brill Building Songwriters), 1920-1930's, and singers: Julie London, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Annie Ross, Blossom Dearie, Dave Frishberg, Travel show, Duets and Duels, Gypsies Tramps & Thieves, and Swing into Spring.
We have been Artstour artists for many years, performing for libraries and theaters across the state. We are also on the Chicago Band Roster. As a husband and wife duo, we expand to add other musicians to create a classic trio sound, or a jazz quartet plus horn or guitar, as you can see in the website videos.

Artistic Vision
Anne & Mark Burnell re-harmonize and arrange material from the Great American Songbook, jazz, and originals until we have discovered our personal version, with jazz and blues at its essence. With two voices, a piano, some percussion instruments, or an additional bass and drummer, there is an acoustic spacious sound and the words are not overpowered by instrumentation. We continue to create, record, write, arrange, listen and perform music we love.
Programs for Specific Audience(s) Expertise
We have enjoyed performing for older adults at retirement centers, nursing homes, for people with disabilities, and Alzheimers - we know the music reaches them. During COVID lockdown, we did concerts for Avenues to Independence, nursing homes, and close friends with terminal illnesses. We both teach music and performance skills - clinics on vocal jazz, performance, at Carnegie Mellon, Chicago State University, and in Paris at the Cabaret Connexion.
